GERD and the Use of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Treatment

GERD (Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease) is a functional disorder in which the LES (lower esophageal sphincter), which is the valve between the esophagus and the abdomen, opens when it shouldn’t, causing stomach acid and content backflow.

Normally, via peristalsis, food moves down the esophagus, the LES eases up to enable the passing of food into the abdomen and then shuts immediately once more. Reflux occurs if the sphincter valve relaxes when it shouldn’t or doesn’t completely close. This backflow is painful since the stomach contents are highly acidic. Over time, this can lead to damage to the esophagus lining or wall. Practically everyone gets heartburn from time to time, but when this happens several times a week and on a regular basis, and leads to chronic irritation of the esophagus, this can be an indication of GERD, which is a far worse condition. Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD. Dysphagia, a lumping sensation in the throat, enhanced production of saliva, a sour taste in the mouth, frequent burping, and regurgitation are the other common symptoms of GERD. Dysphagia can affect your swallowing function and can set off chronic coughing to clear the throat.

According to the AGA (American Gastroenterological Association), GERD affects around 33% of Americans. Be that as it may, this condition can strike people of all ages although the risk rises after 40.

The symptoms manifested by the patient are the bases in which GERD is usually diagnosed. Diagnostic examinations such as x-ray with barium swallow, pressure testing of the lower esophageal sphincter, test of esophageal acidity, and endoscopy are usually performed in patients who do not respond to drugs, or to rule other issues such as cancer of the esophagus or Barrett’s esophagus.

Heartburn and reflux can be triggered by certain foods including spicy foods like onions and garlic, fried or fatty foods, and acidic foods like citrus or tomatoes. Alcohol, soda, and coffee boost the production of stomach acid, which worsens the condition. Cigarette, alcohol, chocolate, and peppermint can cause the LES to relax which can worsen the reflux. Pregnancy, obesity, and hiatal hernia, a condition in which a part of the abdomen upwardly protrudes through can arise and facilitate the occurrence of GERD.

So far, there are no treatments that can cure GERD, therefore, the aim of treatment is to allay the symptoms and minimize damage. Although not recommended as a first-line treatment, surgery can be performed to tighten the LES. The Western conventional way of caring for GERD is the use of Nexium, Prilosec, and other proton pump inhibitors to lessen stomach acid production to a greater degree compared to the older version of drugs (Histamine-2 blockers), which then leads to a better degree of healing.

Proton pump inhibitors generally bring about good symptomatic relief from GERD; unfortunately, on extended courses of treatment, several issues from the use of the drugs can be a matter of concern to individuals. To help heal the ulcers that develop in the esophagus, the acidity in the stomach needs to be significantly decreased for one month to three months. Even if proton pump inhibitors are good at this, the ulcers can turn chronic and may necessitate repeated courses of therapy. There is proof to indicate that protracted use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can lead to issues like inefficient absorption of calcium and vitamin B12 due to the longstanding suppression of stomach acid. This eventually can result in vitamin deficiency and disrupt with the cycle re-absorption and creation of bones, which leads to increased bone fragility. For menopausal women, this may be a problem since it may worsen loss of bone density associated with their menopause. Continued usage of PPIs is also associated with an increased rise of gastric polyps. There is also proof showing that continued use of PPIs can develop dependency, with resulting significant rebound symptoms upon cessation.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), GERD is a manifestation of an internal systemic imbalance. Reflux and heartburn symptoms are oftentimes almost seen as a conflict between the abdomen and the liver. The liver, in TCM, is responsible for keeping everything in the body (blood, digestion, emotions, energy) smoothly flowing in the appropriate directions. The liver can fail to preserve the smooth flowing of blood, digestion, emotions, energy and it starts to rebel when it is severely taxed beyond its comfort zone, usually due to long term stress; instead of the normal downward flow of energy, when the liver rebels, it flows sideways. The liver’s rebellious energy affects the abdomen causing the upward movement of energy in the stomach. This may result in chronic signs and symptoms such as a greasy and thick tongue fur, heartburn, reflux, and burping. The lumping sensation in the throat is known as “plum pit qi” and is a sure sign of stagnated liver qi.

In contrast to the way Western medicine treats the symptoms of GERD, TCM takes the impact of stress in the body very seriously. The foundation of the principles of TCM is built on the development of pathology. TCM uses a differential diagnosis that looks at the effects of stress on the interactions between the body’s organ systems and the resulting rise in imbalances. The manifested symptoms and the imbalances are then addressed.

The plan of treatment for the reflux and heartburn symptoms may differ and are based on the patient’s specific presentation. The plan, in general, is to normalize and relax the liver, remove the stress that causes the liver to turn on its neighbor the abdomen, bring back the downward normal movement of stomach qi, and dissipate the heat and convert the dampness that will likely accumulate due to the disruption of stomach qi. Both Chinese herbal therapy and acupuncture are ideal treatments for these objectives. You may elect to do both or chose either based on the severity of your symptoms. Depending on preference, lifestyle, and severity of symptoms you may choose either or elect to do both. You might also opt to utilize either treatment to manage the symptoms, to lessen the side effects of your drugs, to decrease the dose of your medications or to minimize their side effects.

Digestive Disorders Can Be Effectively Addressed with Acupuncture

Because of food lacking in nutritional value and poor eating habits, digestive disorders are on the rise among people of all ages. Sadly, more and more children are eating processed foods and being “treated” with junk foods by their parents and this trend doesn’t seem like it’s going to slow down in the near future. This is why digestive disorders are becoming more and more common among children and young adults. A dear friend of mine phoned to ask me if I can treat her daughter’s constipation. She has had this problem since birth and has tried tons of treatments to no avail. Proper diet and fiber helped somehow but have not cured the problem. She often cries because the cramping and pain in her stomach is oftentimes too much to bear.

This is just a 9 year old with a really serious health problem. But, as with any 9 year old, she is scared and anxious of needles. Good thing that the trust she had in me was stronger than her dislike of needles. I calmly explained to her mom and to her about the procedure she would undergo and what outcomes she and her mom should expect.

Both mom and daughter agreed to the treatment. Then, while I showed the child the needles to be used I also explained to her that the needles are sterile, single use medical instruments. She looked at the needles and gently touched them then pondered for a few minutes. Then, she laid down on the table and closed her eyes. Stoically, she told me that she was ready for the pain. I started out by inserting a few needles in her legs and stomach. As the needles went in, she opened her eyes and told her mother, “Mom, it feels more like a mosquito bite but without the itch.”

After finishing inserting the needles, I shut the lights off and left the room with her mom at her side. Her mom came out 10 minutes later telling me that her daughter is asleep. About 40 minutes later, I started taking out the needles. She woke up sleepy but very much relaxed. It told her her mom to include in her diet fiber and probiotics. Both left my office happy and by the looks of their smile seemed to have enjoyed the whole experience. I received a text message three hours later from her mom stating that her child had bowel movement without discomfort or pain. I gave her six more treatments the following weeks, which all led to wonderful results. That was more than a year ago. Today, she still has daily bowel movements that were all normal without any pain or discomfort. The child was very happy about the whole outcome that she tells me she loves acupuncture. She tells me things like, “I have a headache today, should I have acupuncture treatment for it?”

Elderly Health Issues Resolved with TCM and Acupuncture

I worked for over two years at a pain clinic that happened to be connected to a long term care facility for senior patients whom a lot of them were my patients. I found that acupuncture was really incredibly helpful on my patients even if their treatments at the clinic were multidisciplinary (cared for by different physicians and getting different types of remedies based on their conditions.

In terms of health conditions, older patients seem to suffer from unique problems. For one, a lot of them are on a wide variety of drugs due to myriad conditions. I discovered that I need really to sit down with them, and in the initial consultation, take the time to document what drugs they were on and then do some studies to ensure that none of these drugs are the ones causing any of the problems they were coming to see me for and if these drugs were reacting adversely with each other. The so many medications my elderly patients were taking truly astounded me. Most were not really what they were for, and some had been taking them for so long that they had forgotten why they were prescribed.

According to traditional Chinese medicine or TCM, as people age, their life force or vital energy (jing) gradually declines. This is a natural part of aging and is normal and healthy. But since this jing is not infinite, it slowly is exhausted. How it is used more or less reflects the way we live our lives, regardless if it was used wiselyor not. This can be gleaned on someone who has done drugs, did a lot of drinking, smoked a lot, did a lot of partying and has lived hard… this person appears to be worn out and usually looks older than he/she actually is. This person has been exhausting his/her Jing resulting in premature aging.

I noticed one other thing about my senior patients. When I took the time to sit down and talk with them it made a huge impact in the quality and speed of their recovery. Showing that I was really listening to them and establishing a connection with them made a huge difference in their treatment and their prognosis. Most of us have failed to see what a little act of kindness can do to people, especially, in the medical profession, and specifically, with seniors. Sadly, a lot of doctors don’t give the time to really listen to their older patients. Yes, they are the authorities when it comes to illness and disease but most are skeptical of treatments they know little or nothing about. Giving your patient an opportunity to relay to you his/her experience of what is causing their ailment, or what is out of balance is a key part of the treatment and the subsequent healing process.

I noticed also that my elderly patients were very seldom touched. An extremely crucial aspect of our lives is touch. Physiologically, touch is important for stimulating, the immune system and an emotional feeling of purpose, affection, and connectedness. Sometimes, I also noticed that they would hold my hand as they tell me how they were doing just to feel a connection with another person. Therefore, I always strive to integrate some massage into the therapy which they always really like. Acupuncture and massage are extremely stimulating and moving to the body helping seniors treat stagnation and keep things flowing freely since these people often suffer from energy and blood stagnation.
.
Why Acupuncture in Austin Can be Very Beneficial for the Elderly

Acupuncture works extremely well because of all these factors. To the elderly, drug interactions can be potentially dangerous. With acupuncture, you don’t have to worry about this concern since it can be applied in a gentle way, based on the patient’s needs.

Due to their tendency to suffer from long term deficiencies, the elderly are not as sensitive and by the time a symptom is felt, it is usually already very serious. Acupuncture is a powerful treatment which can be used on very deficient or sensitive patients. Besides acupuncture, TCM has many modes of treatment including exercise, which is extremely important, emotional wellness (which I was attending to by allowing them to express what they were feeling and talking to them), and dietary therapy (I noticed that a lot of elderly people were not eating a balanced meal). A lot of them don’t move around much or go out. I always recommend walking as a part of their treatment even if it is just walking around the halls, although I prefer that they go outside and breathe some fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature. This is helpful for improving mood, getting the blood to circulate, and for the movement of energy in the body.

In the clinic, I and a physiotherapist set up a program for a female elderly patient. We told her to go to the next door three times a week to participate in an exercise class with the seniors. This class was always packed and the staff noticed a significant improvement in the mood and overall health of the patients.

Depression is another common issue. Most senior citizens live in facilities such as the place I work in because they lost a spouse, are unable to care of themselves, and/or are sick. This can impact the psyche big time hence, depression is common. On its own, any of these can be a big adjustment, but since these factors oftentimes come together, it is easy to see why a lot of people become depressed. Some shut down and withdraw, some become depressed and sad, and some are frustrated and angry at their plight. I noticed that people fared better when they are more connected to other people and to the world. They become more balanced and happy, and health-wise, really good if they went on outings, saw their children and friends, and had visitors.

TCM and acupuncture thankfully, have a lot of ways to treat depression. In TCM, depression can manifest in different types and reasons. The patient can be on the way to recovery by means of an accurate diagnosis and a thorough intake. I witnessed lots of patients dramatically get better and seeing them improve perhaps was the most rewarding of my career. My elderly patients were the most appreciative and most kind hearted patients I have ever met.

Sadly, our society does not think highly of its seniors the way most cultures do. The oldest members of the village, family, or town, in several cultures around the world are highly revered since they possess something the younger individuals do not… wisdom. This kind of wisdom can only be attained by living, therefore, among them are the wise. Our Western culture does not have the same reverence for our elderly. If it had, they would not be placed in homes and not forgotten, and abandoned. They have so much to offer and teach us.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE – AN INTRODUCTION

In traditional Chinese Medicine, (TCM) The Five Elements Phases (or these systems???) correspond to the five elements of nature: Fire, Wood, Earth, Water, and Metal. According to TCM, the organs are interconnected with the fours seasons of the year, tastes, temperatures, and colors, which are all essential to our well-being and health. The Kidney, for example, is very sensitive to damp and cold, Heart conditions many manifest as a “red” complexion and sour is the taste considered good for the health of the Liver. Our interconnectedness is one of the key aspects of the Five Element’s Theory. When we consider TCM as the basis of our health, we are tapping into thousands of years of accumulated knowledge and wisdom which gives us a motivation to proactively care for and maintain our personal health and well-being.

THE LIVER

This TCM organ is associated with the spring season and the wood element. Spring is a time of new starts and activities. As an organ system the Liver is a very important body system in TCM as it is deemed to be the body’s energy factory, capable of handling more than 500 regulatory functions that allows the body to adapt and be flexible. In TCM theory, besides neutralizing toxins in the body, the Liver also balances out excess anger. It also controls microcirculation and is where Blood is stored. A healthy Liver means healthy eyes and healthy nails.

THE HEART

In TCM, the heart relates to the fire of summer, and is the season or time of abundance. The heart, according to Chinese philosophy, is where Shen is housed. Shen comprises the psychological, mental, and spiritual aspects of our body. If you have a healthy heart, you also enjoy a joyful countenance and a clear complexion.

THE SPLEEN

The harvest of late summer and the earth all corresponds to the spleen. In TCM, this organ is mainly responsible for digestion. Qi is created from the food we eat. The spleen mixes the Qi with blood and sends it to the heart and lungs. A strong energy, healthy appetite, good muscle tone and good digestion are signs of a healthy Spleen. A weak Spleen will result in fatigue, diarrhea, abdominal distension, phlegm-related conditions, poor digestion, diarrhea, obesity, and edema. The lips and the Spleen are associated with each other. Signs that Spleen energy is out of harmony is if you keep on having dry and pale lips and a dull taste.

THE LUNGS

The autumn season and the metal element are related to the lungs. Taoist philosophy highly regards this organ system which is evident in Qi Gong, an exercise that promotes vitality and repulses disease through breathing exercises. From the Air, the Lungs extract the Essence. It then combines it with the Essence from food delivered by the Spleen. These two Essences combine to create vital energy or Qi which is distributed downward into the chest and stomach and outward toward the muscles, extremities, and skin. Traditional Chinese medicine refers to the skin as the “third lung” and a deficient lung Qi is deemed to be the cause of most skin conditions. The body’s first line of defense is the Wei Qi, which is alerted by the Lungs. The Wei Qi gives the body the opportunity to adapt to its environment and repulses infiltrators. The delivery of moisture to all parts of the body is also the responsibility of the Lungs. Strong Lungs guarantee a well functioning metabolism. The Kidneys which is associated with winter and water, is where the seed of continuous regeneration is kept. This seed or essence is called the Jing. In TCM, Jing is the primary essence that we inherited from our parents.

THE KIDNEYS

One of the most important organs of the body, the Kidneys is where bone marrow is produced and is responsible for healthy brain function, and strong teeth and bones. The Kidneys control the fluid balance of the body, filtering out waste water from the body. The Lungs send the Qi to the Kidneys. The Lungs also have the function of holding Qi down, which brings about healthy breathing.

The TCM Herb Corydalis Yan Hu Su Can Effectively Treat Shaking, Spasms, Seizures, and Jerks

Liver Wind, in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is associated with pain and uncontrolled movement in the form of shaking, spasms, seizures, or jerks as in Parkinson`s. It may also frequently refer to pain akin to fibromyalgia –movement shifting from one part of the body to another. Corydalis Yan Hu Su has for centuries, been used to decrease pain and prevent the rise of seizures such as grand mal. It works by controlling liver wind and aiding the movement of blood. Corydalis has long been used by TCM practitioners to help control pain particularly when other herbs are added to guide the Corydalis to the affected part of the body.

Pharmaceutical companies have tried to exploit the potency of this herb, and, have endeavored to isolate its active ingredient it for synthesis and, obviously for financial gain. Their research led to the following:

The development of electrically kindled amygdala is where the influence of an active component isolated from corydalis yanhusu root, THP (dl-tetrahydropalmatine), was tested on. An ultrasonic system for vertical motion measurements measured the seizure activity. THP was injected intraperitoneally half an hour prior to the application of the daily kindling stimulus to prevent the progress of the kindling process.

The motion responses and the score of the behavioral seizure, which developed normally during electrical kindling, fell below their initial values.

The outcomes indicate that THP is an extremely potent ingredient with anticonvulsant and antiepileptogenicqualities when used on electrically kindled rats.

The issue was that the isolated dl-tetrahydropalmatinebecame toxic and this can lead to liver disorders such as hepatitis. It never occurred to them to just focus on the safe whole root extract and to prevent the rise of more problems.

It is strongly advised to take the corydalis herb is in a 5:1 ratio. Five grams raw herb= 1 gram crystals. This quickly dissolves any liquid and is made up of alcohol processes using very low heat, fresh organic herbs, and natural water.

Combined with Gou Teng and He Shu Wu, corydalis has been a highly successful TCM treatment for Parkinson`s.Aswater medicine, it should be boiled daily. The problem with this treatment is the cost. A lot of the raw herbs in Tien Ma GuTeng are quite expensive. Patients may also have difficulty in preparing the formula. The formula itself is not tasty at all so you have to tolerate its taste when you drink it. the current TCM protocol for Parkinson’s disease is to take two grams of Corydalis 5:1 extract powder (two grams twice daily) two times each day and an inexpensive version of the herbal remedy Tien Ma GuTeng Wan. These formulas need to be taken along with lots of He Shu Wu (liquid or powder extract) every day for the rest of your life.

Remember, cordyalis is not just for seizures and Parkinson`s. It has long been used in TCM as a way to control pain more so when other herbs are introduced to guide the Corydalis to the part of the body where it is needed.

Some Natural Alternative Treatments To Help Prevent The Onset of Breast Cancer

The threat of breast cancer has forced women of all ages to seek ways to safeguard themselves against this deadly disease. One of the best ways to prevent breast cancer is by strengthening their immune system. A lot of health supplements that are sold in the market claim to help strengthen the immune system. Sad to say, these products have failed to stop the development of breast cancer in many of their users.

One highly recommended health supplement is the Maitake mushroom, which is usually taken as tea. Because Maitake mushroom is high in beta-glucans, it has been scientifically proven to boost the immune system. This mushroom is sold in dehydrated form (powdered or liquid form) and in liquid form at health stores and local Chinese drugstores. This mushroom therefore, is relatively easy to ingest.

Ginseng is another powerful herb that has various well known health benefits. It can be another suggested health supplement for women trying to protect themselves against breast cancer. Ginseng can help stop the growth of the cancer when used at the earliest stages of the cancer. Ginseng is widely available in capsule or liquid form and it’s also known to possess immunological boosting qualities. This herb is also acknowledged to possess anti-tumor qualities.

Scientific research shows that women who have used Ginseng ahead of being informed by their doctor that they have breast cancer had a rate of survival greater than those who did not take the herb prior to developing the disease. Besides being a powerful anti-cancer agent, Ginseng also is an excellent treatment for hormonal imbalances and depression.

One of most potent natural remedies for fighting the onset of breast cancer is acupuncture in Bellingham. This treatment is known to help restore the circulation of the natural energies of the body which also results in wellness and optimal health.

While undergoing toxic radiation therapy, a lot of women suffering from breast cancer also undergo acupuncture treatment in order to reduce the damaging effects associated with radiation therapy. While you are considering or actually getting acupuncture, you can also take advantage of additional natural therapies such as Chromotherapy. This procedure can help restore the natural energies of the body by way of exposing the body to certain colored lighting.

For those searching for a way to improve their health, they can consider either using a sauna at the health spa or local gym or purchase outright their own sauna. Sauna therapy can help detoxify the body of substances that can cause breast cancer or any kind of cancer. It can melt away impurities, beef up the immune system, and provide an over-all, complete feeling of wellness.
